| Doctor from K2 disaster to speak at Outdoor Retailer |
|
The Outdoor Retailer Winter Market is in full swing and around 17,000 people have filled the halls of the Salt Palace in downtown Salt Lake City. Exhibitors are displaying the latest in outdoor gear and retailers are deciding what to stock their store shelves with. But besides soaking in the dizzying parade of awesome gear and wishing you had millions of dollars to buy it all, one of the best things about the market is the opportunity to participate in workshops and listen to harrowing stories from people who have experienced the best and worst the outdoors has thrown at them. One such event occurs on Sunday, January 25th at 11 a.m. when Talus Athlete Dr. Eric Meyer will speak at the Downtown Marriott. He'll talk about the effects of cold weather and altitude on the human respiratory system as well as his experience during the deadly accident on K2 in August of 2008. K2 is the second highest mountain on Earth and the August accident was the most deadly event in K2's mountaineering history. Eleven climbers from different expeditions died in an avalanche after a serac collapsed. Three other mountaineers were seriously injured. This event is free but organizers say that seating is limited. Refreshments will be provided and the first 10 people in the door will receive a Talus ColdAvenger® mask. The downtown Marriott is located at 75 S. West Temple and the event will be held in Salon E.
